4 months later…

In January of 2018 Green Mustard Entertainment, Inc. purchased the name and assets of Anime PDX and Newcon PDX from Events PDX, LLC. Our goal? To reboot the franchise after the abrupt cancellation of Newcon PDX 2018. Originally, we had planned to take the summer off and roll Anime PDX into Newcon PDX (now Fandom PDX) in January of 2019. After seeing the impact the cancellation had on the Portland regional fan community, though, we decided to fast-track one more convention in the Anime PDX time slot.

So, in February of this year, we started work on Fandom PDX 2018 – and last weekend we drew 754 attendees over the two days of the event. The production team worked tirelessly to rebuild the convention from the ashes of the old one while focusing on avoiding the missteps of the preceding productions. Fandom PDX 2018 happened thanks to the attendees, the guests, the artists, the vendors, and the local businesses that took the time to support the project.

There are so many people to thank for this and I apologize in advance if I have left anyone out. (My brain is still recovering from the whirlwind of running all of this.)

So now what?

We do it again. We do it bigger. We do it better.

The team has already started production on Fandom PDX 2019. The event will take place Saturday and Sunday, January 5-6, 2019 at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel. This time we’ve rented ALL of the convention space at the hotel and we have over six months to build, plan, and create this event from the best parts of the old one with some new elements that Green Mustard Entertainment, Inc. can bring to the table.

So keep watching folks. We’re only getting started.

The Fandom PDX 2018 Costume Contest

What pop culture convention is complete without a costume contest? Here are the rules for competing in ours for 2018.

SIGN UP: Saturday, 6:00 PM in Main Events (Mt. Adams Ballroom)
COMPETITION: Saturday, 6:30 PM in Main Events (Mt. Adams Ballroom)

THE RULES

1. You must have purchased an entry into Fandom PDX 2018 in order to enter/present on stage for the Costume Contest.

2. The Costume Contest is a family-oriented event. Please keep all costumes to a “PG-13″ rating (i.e. no nudity or overly revealing attire).

3. No bought costumes. Costumes must be 50% crafted or more. You may purchase parts of a costume, but said parts must be disclosed during the judging process. If you are not the maker of your costume (and simply modeling), said creator of the costume must be present with you upon entry. If the costume wins an award, the award will go to the creator of the costume.

4. All weapons and props must conform with Fandom PDX 2018 rules, hotel/conference center policies, and local laws concerning carrying a weapon. If there is a question of doubt, don’t bring it. (see Fandom PDX policies -> http://fandompdx.com/policies/)

5. Please provide reference images of the character you are dressed as. We cannot guarantee the judges will know what your character looks like, so having something to compare to will help you as much as them! Please provide this image on a piece of paper to attach to your costume contest registration form. No digital images (i.e. cell phones, iPads, portable computers, tablets, etc.) or books can be submitted for your reference image. Please print the picture out for the judges.

6. Each costume must be entered separately. The costumes may be presented on stage (and prejudged) together, but each costume is judged as a separate entry.

7. The contest will be limited to 50 entries total. Please be at theMain Events (Mt. Adams Ballroom) to sign up.

8. Fandom PDX (Green Mustard Entertainment, Inc.) reserves the right to modify, update, or amend the rules at any time.

FEATURED TALENT: Kamon Tari will be at Fandom PDX 2018!

Kamon Tari is a New Mexico based artist, model, twitch streamer, and cosplayer. She specializes in promotional cosplaying and charity work. With over 3 years of professional experience, Kamon Tari has judged numerous costume contests, ran panels, and hosted a variety of events at cons around the US. When she is not assisting clients, she sells her artwork and takes donations for charities at her personal booth – so on swing by, have a chat, and see what she’s up to! She credits the wonderful and inclusive cosplay community that inspired her to aspire towards her dream career and hopes to spread the love.

Kamon Tari will have a table in the Exhibitor’s Hall all weekend – so stop by and say hi!

GUEST: Invader ZIM Scribe Eric Trueheart will be at Fandom PDX (courtesy of @OniPress)

Eric Trueheart – writer for the Invader ZIM cartoon and comic book – will be a guest at Fandom PDX!!!

Eric Trueheart has been writing for comedy and animation for over ten years. He’s written for Nickelodeon’s shameful and enduring cult classic, Invader ZIM, the BAFTA-nominated Yin Yang Yo for Disney XD, as well as writing pilots for Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, and freelancing for everyone in the goddamn business. Most recently, he helped develop the DreamWorks animation film Turbo into the first animated series for Netflix.

His comedy shorts have been accepted to the L.A. Comedy Shorts Festival. And his comedy group, “The Ministry of Unknown Science,” had a top-ten comedy podcast on iTunes, won praise from the Times and the Weekly, as well as garnering a pilot for Fox. (It also got them a meeting with Simon Cowell, who’s a really nice guy in person, and doesn’t bite the heads of babies unless you ask him nicely.)

Eric graduated from USC cinema school and Harvard university, for no reason. He has never driven a race car across Monaco wearing only a Batman mask and the words “Soy Bomb” on his chest. That was someone else.

FANDOM PDX, PORTLAND’S RECENTLY RE-BRANDED POP CULTURE EVENT, RETURNS TO HOST ITS TENTH CONVENTION!
The annual event (formerly Newcon PDX) will take place this year at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel.

(PORTLAND, OREGON, MAY 14, 2018) Fandom PDX, Portland’s local, hotel based pop culture, fantasy, sci-fi, and gaming convention, will be hosted this year at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel located at 8325 NE Airport Way Portland, OR 97220. The two-day celebration will take place June 2-3, 2018 and starts at 10:00 AM each morning, with registration opening at 9:00 AM.

In addition to vendors, artists, and all-day tabletop and video gaming, Fandom PDX will offer several special attractions for attendees. Kimberly Brooks, the voice of Allura on the hit Netflix series Voltron: Legendary Defender, will be on hand to meet attendees. Fan will also recognize her as the voice of Jasper from Steven Universe and Ashley Williams from the video game series Mass Effect. Fans of animation will recognize Richard Horvitz as the voice of many iconic characters, including Invader Zim, Billy from The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy, Daggett from The Angry Beavers, Kaos from the Skylanders franchise and Alpha 5 from the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. In addition to Richard’s animation work, gamers will recognize him from his many video game roles in such classics as Psychonauts (Raz), Ratchet And Clank Series (Zoni, Pollyx, Zurgo), Destroy All Humans (Orthopox), and Skylanders (Kaos) to name a few. Richard began his acting career on camera and many may recall his role as Alan Eakian in the 1980’s cult classic Summer School.

Tickets are available for purchase online or at the event: $30 for Saturday, $20 for Sunday, or $40 for the weekend. Children under 3 years old get in for free. Parking is $5 at the venue.
